Guidelines and Procedures for Organizations Requesting Allied Status with the University

This policy outlines the guidelines and procedures for a unit requesting Allied status for an organization, and the benefits afforded Allied organizations by the University.

Conditions Under Which Allied Status May Be Granted

For the purposes of according benefits, Allied status may be granted to an organization that is categorized as a governmental (state, federal or local) organization, a professional/technical/public service organization, or a commercial organization (Commercial Allied status is limited to private companies that are located in the University of Illinois Research Park).

An Allied Governmental Organization (state, federal or local) is defined as a governmental agency directly associated with the University that supports specific aspects of the University's program and is located in the Champaign-Urbana community.

An Allied Professional/Technical/Public Service Organization is defined as a professional, technical or public service organization located in the Champaign-Urbana community whose activities contribute directly to the University's program.

University Related Organizations, which are formed by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois, are not covered by this policy.

Attributes Required for Organizations to be Considered for Allied Status

The organization must not be receiving state funds for the services or benefits to be provided by the University under Allied status.

The organization's request must be sponsored and supported by a University unit or office. The basis for such sponsorship must be a cooperative and beneficial relationship between the organization and the sponsoring unit.

The sponsoring unit must justify the need for the Allied status benefits to be accorded to the organization and must identify discretionary funds under its control that it will use to meet the cost to the University for benefits accorded the organization under Allied status. (All Allied Research Park Companies are sponsored by the Director of the Research Park, and associated costs are managed as part of the Research Park budget.)

Individuals do not qualify for Allied status. Only members or employees of organizations granted Allied status may share in the benefits accorded or avail themselves of the services made available by the University to that organization.

To meet the requirements outlined above, the appropriate Allied Status agreement form for each category should be completed by the sponsoring unit and the organization requesting Allied status. See forms below.

Benefits which may be conferred under Allied Status

These benefits will not be extended automatically to all Allied organizations, but will be determined by agreement between the organization, the sponsoring unit, and the approval of the Office of Corporate Relations.

Access to University services and enjoyment of benefits by Allied organizations and their employees will depend upon the degree of relationship to the University's educational programs, the proximity of the organization to the campus, and the current availability of those services and benefits.

These Guidelines do not confer any type of tuition or fee waiver upon the employees of the Allied organization.

Process for Requesting Allied Status The sponsoring unit at the University initiates a request for Allied status for an organization, using the appropriate form. These forms are in PDF format and will require Adobe Acrobat Reader to download.
