Illinois and Mayo Clinic awarded $20m Grant for Cancer Research

Pengfei Song, the lead researcher at the Cancer Center at Illinois, which has been awarded a $20m grant

Pengfei Song, a researcher at the Cancer Center at Illinois has partnered with Mayo Clinic researcher, Shigao Chen to combat the issue of breast cancer misdiagnosis. Through Song’s proposal of using a new 3D multimodal ultrasound imaging technique, the team aims to tackle this problem. Their study has been awarded the US Department of Defense’s award — CDMRP FY20 Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Breakthrough Award, which grants them over $2.2 million in funding.

“Not only does the new transducer technology provide adequate imaging speed to achieve multimodal imaging, but it also paves a clear pathway for future clinical translation of the technologies developed in this proposal to benefit millions of breast cancer patients both in the US and around the world,” Song said.
